Every place has its “secret” spots that only the locals know about (or at least only the locals know how to get there)! This isn’t an exhaustive list of secret locales in the Black Hills, it’s just the ones the Trekkers have found on their own. I’ll keep updating it as we continue to seek out and find more of them!
Black Hills Secret Places
Below are three truly “secret” locations in the Black Hills. If you’re expecting detailed directions to these sites you’ve come to the wrong place. Come on, you didn’t think I was just going to tell you where there were, did you? 😉 Part of the fun is finding them on your own! But I will give you some helpful tips to get you started on your search!
Not-So-Secret Locales in the Black Hills
The next several spots aren’t really “secret” but they also don’t show up on all the maps or they can be difficult to find if you don’t know where they are. I’ve offered detailed directions on how to get to these sites:
Stratobowl near Rapid City –This is a VERY popular and easy hike just south of Rapid City. It is easier to locate now that they’ve put in a large parking lot for it.
The Terry Peak Lookout Tower –In good weather, you can reach this site in the northern hills with a regular, 2-wheel-drive vehicle. If the weather is wet or snowy though a 4-wheel drive may be required and some parts could even be impassable under certain conditions.
“Secret” Hiking Trails off Sheridan Lake Road –These two locales aren’t “secret” at all, they just aren’t well-marked. They are right off Sheridan Lake Road so anyone can reach them in normal weather conditions.
Cement Ridge Lookout Tower –This is the only Wyoming site on the list (though it’s still in the Black Hills.). This one requires a little more effort to reach. You can do it with a 2-wheel-drive vehicle, but I wouldn’t suggest it unless conditions are optimal. It will require you to drive on a dirt road that isn’t always maintained well so use caution and venture out here at your own risk.
Were you able to find any of these “secret” sites? What about the “not-so-secret” ones? If so, I hope you enjoyed your experience. Tell me about your adventure in the comments!
